About Monte Beck

Monte D. Beck is Of Counsel at Beck, Amsden & Stalpes. He grew up in Anaconda, Montana, earned a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Montana in 1975, and received his J.D. from the University of Montana School of Law in 1979, where he served on the Editorial Board of the Montana Law Review. After graduating, Monte clerked for two years with U.S. District Judge Paul G. Hatfield in Great Falls, traveling throughout the western United States, Hawaii, and the Mariana Islands. In January 1982, he opened the Beck Law Office in Bozeman, emphasizing representation of injured workers, consumers, and employees. Monte served as a Gallatin County Public Defender and as a Board Member of the Montana Trial Lawyers Association beginning in 1986. He received MTLA's Public Service Award in 1990, its Trial Lawyer of the Year Award in 1991, and served as MTLA President in 1993. In 2001 and 2002, he served as President of the Montana Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Monte was appointed Special Assistant Attorney General to co-represent the State of Montana in tobacco litigation that settled for $900 million. His jury results include a $2.2 million verdict for a sexual assault victim, an $8 million wrongful death verdict for a defective tire, a $1.3 million medical negligence verdict, a $4.1 million settlement for lumber mill employees who lost retirement funds at mill closure, and a $3.2 million wrongful death judgment for a tribal member killed under a Bureau of Indian Affairs contract. Monte is admitted before the Montana District Courts, U.S. District Courts in Montana, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Beck, Amsden and Stalpes co-counseled 98 Opportunity, Montana landowners through 13 years of litigation against ARCO over arsenic deposited by Anaconda's copper smelter, ultimately settling the case in 2021 after it twice reached the Montana Supreme Court and once reached the U.S. Supreme Court.
