Emily Downs Martin is a Bastrop native who graduated from Louisiana State University with her Bachelor of Science Degree in 2017. Emily then received her Juris Doctor from Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center in May 2020. She also holds a graduate diploma in Comparative Law. While in law school, Emily gained valuable experience working at the Louisiana Department of Justice under Attorney General Jeff Landry in the Public Protection Division.

She also completed an externship under Judge Phillip M. Lester in Bastrop City Court. Emily attended Ouachita Christian School and returned to northeast Louisiana after receiving her degrees. She has since made Monroe her home. Emily is a passionate attorney who cares tremendously about both her clients and community.

On October 26, 2016 Gerald Farrar, with a blood alcohol content of 0.346 percent, struck a guardrail on U.S. Highway 425 in Morehouse Parish hard enough to tear the right front wheel off his truck, then drove about 800 feet on three wheels and left the wheel in the road. Monica Duran hit it and crashed into a guardrail, suffering a concussion, a back injury and neurological damage. A jury awarded her $843,155 in compensatory damages and $3,000,000 in exemplary damages for the drunk driving. On April 10, 2024 the Louisiana Second Circuit affirmed every dollar.
