Proven verdicts and settlements
A Davidson County jury awarded Fox Sports reporter Erin Andrews $55 million after finding that the Nashville Marriott at Vanderbilt negligently disclosed her room location to a stalker who altered a peephole to film her without consent.
A San Diego jury awarded $15.5 million after Hyatt hotel staff extended a diabetic guest's reservation without verifying her wellbeing, leaving Cindy Gonzalez uncontacted for nearly a day while she lay comatose between the beds in her room.
A Los Angeles jury found FirstService Residential California LLC vicariously liable for a crash caused by its drunk general manager on State Route 134 in 2013. The passenger's right arm was nearly severed and required about 30 surgeries. The jury set damages at $15,030,718.83 and found the passenger 20 percent at fault, so $12,024,575.06 stood against the company.
William M. Keck III, 48, died on September 3, 2017 after developing heat exhaustion during a paddle tennis tournament at the Bel-Air Bay Club in Pacific Palisades. Club staff did not call 911 for about three hours. On November 25, 2019, a Santa Monica jury found the club 80 percent at fault and set his mother's damages at $15 million, which comparative fault reduced to $12 million.
Milton Olin Jr., a 65-year-old attorney and former Napster executive, was killed on Dec. 8, 2013 when a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy typing on his patrol car's computer drifted into a Calabasas bike lane. In May 2018 the county's Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an $11.75 million settlement of the family's wrongful death lawsuit, days before a civil trial was to begin.
A 12-year-old boy collapsed after running laps in P.E. at Dodson Middle School in Rancho Palos Verdes on March 6, 2018, and died. His parents sued the Los Angeles Unified School District, alleging staff did not call 911 or use CPR or a defibrillator and that a school policy delayed the call. After a judge allowed the negligence claim to proceed, the parties settled in March 2022 as trial was set to begin, and the $9.5 million figure was reported that September.
