About Matthew Clement
Matthew A. Clement is a partner at Clement, Van Ronzelen & Schulte LLC, which he co-founded in January 2021. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Iowa in 1992 and a J.D. cum laude from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law in 1995, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and served on the Missouri Law Review, including as Associate Editor-in-Chief from 1994 to 1995. He is admitted to the Missouri Bar and the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri, both since 1995, the Kansas Bar since 1996 (currently inactive), and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit since 1998.
Matt began his legal career at the international firm Shook, Hardy & Bacon in Kansas City before joining Cook, Vetter, Doerhoff & Landwehr in Jefferson City, and later co-founded his current firm. His practice focuses on large-scale litigation, including catastrophic injury cases, insurance bad faith and coverage disputes, mass tort litigation, and class actions, along with banking and business matters. He was selected as a Missouri Super Lawyer in 2010, holds an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, and served as president of the Cole County Bar Association in 2010.
Proven verdicts and settlements
A Cole County jury returned $1.56 billion in November 2023 across four plaintiffs whose claims were consolidated for one trial: three Roundup users who developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma and the wife of one of them on a loss of consortium claim. The trial court later cut the punitive awards to roughly nine times each plaintiff's compensatory damages, bringing the judgment down to about $611 million, and the Missouri appellate courts left that judgment standing.
