A Cook County jury returned a $101 million verdict against West Suburban Medical Center after staff ignored fetal monitoring for six hours during labor, though a pre-verdict high-low agreement limited the family's recovery to $50 million.
Karen Lopez, a 33-year-old teacher, died in February 2008 after hemorrhaging during a cesarean delivery. Her husband sued over a placenta condition that was not diagnosed beforehand or properly managed. In November 2013 a Cook County jury found University of Chicago Hospital and two physicians liable and awarded $15.55 million. MacNeal Hospital was found not liable.
