Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, representing the family of Sonya Massey, secured a $10 million wrongful-death settlement with Sangamon County, Illinois, after sheriff's deputy Sean Grayson shot the 36-year-old mother in her own kitchen when she called 911 to report a possible prowler. Crump called it by far the largest settlement of any kind in the county's history.

Verona Gunn, 84, a retired teacher, died on May 25, 2019 after a speeding Chicago police van ran a red light and a police SUV was driven into her car. The city conceded liability, and a Cook County jury in March 2023 awarded her estate $4.75 million. Three other occupants of the car shared a further $180,000.
