About Mark McKenna
Mark R. McKenna was born and raised in Chicago and has been a trial lawyer since 1994, when he began working with Christopher Hurley as an associate. He became a partner at Hurley McKenna & Mertz in 2004. McKenna represents plaintiffs in all areas of personal injury law, including medical malpractice, automobile and trucking negligence, product liability, construction negligence, and sexual abuse cases against the Catholic Church and the Boy Scouts of America. He secured the largest stroke verdict in Illinois history, a jury award of $41,149,942.38 in Pierce v. OSF HealthCare System et al. in Cook County Circuit Court in May 2024, on behalf of a former attorney who suffered a debilitating stroke caused by improper management of anticoagulation therapy. To date, McKenna has secured over $130 million in verdicts and settlements for his clients.
He has extensive trial experience in Illinois state courts and in federal and state courts across Arizona, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, Florida, Ohio, and Maryland. In 2012, McKenna was elected by fellow trial lawyers to the Board of Managers of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association. He has also been selected as a Super Lawyer by the Super Lawyers rating service. Prior to law school, McKenna interned at Kirkland and Ellis in Chicago, where he worked as part of a trial team.

A Cook County jury awarded $41,149,942 to Craig Pierce, a former Bushnell, Illinois lawyer, and his wife Susan after finding that OSF HealthCare, Fresenius Medical Care of Illinois, RenalCare Associates, and Dr. Sudha Cherukuri failed to manage his Coumadin therapy, leading to a massive stroke in 2016. The firm reports it as the largest stroke-related verdict in Illinois history.
