A jury awarded $8 million to the family of Giovani Pulido, a 15-year-old Encinal High School freshman who died of sudden cardiac arrest during spring football practice in May 2016, finding Alameda Unified School District negligent for failing to have an automated external defibrillator on campus.
A jury awarded Michael Sysak and his wife $3,112,843 after propane accidentally ignited at a Garden Grove retail station during a routine canister refill on July 3, 2015, burning Sysak across his lower legs and forearms.
A San Bernardino County jury awarded Francisco Perez $1,083,902 in 2018 after a tractor-trailer struck the rear of his pickup truck on a freeway; the parties later resolved the case for $1.275 million after verdict, once prejudgment interest and costs were factored in.
