A native of San Cristobal, Tachira, Venezuela, Schmid graduated in the top 10% of his class with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Universidad Catolica del Tachira. He later earned his Master of Laws (LL.M.) with a concentration in Corporate and Commercial Law from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.

He is licensed to practice in Venezuela and Indiana and is bilingual in English and Spanish. During law school, he volunteered more than 50 hours of pro bono service in housing law, assisting individuals facing eviction, and participated in the Hispanic Law Society.

Schmid is married to Leyda Castro, who is also an attorney at the firm.
