Earlier in his career, he served as a prosecuting attorney for the 19th Judicial District in Greeley and the 1st Judicial District in Golden, and practiced criminal defense and civil rights litigation at Hampton & Pigott, LLP.

Ponce is also a U.S. military veteran. He served in the United States Army from 2006 to 2008 in a combat aviation brigade with one tour in Iraq, and served as a commissioned officer in the Wyoming Army National Guard from 2012 to 2018, retiring as a Captain.
