About Richard Shevitz
After more than 30 years of practicing law, including nearly 25 at CohenMalad LLP as Equity Partner and Chair of the Class Action practice group, Richard Shevitz now serves as Of Counsel for the firm. During his tenure, Richard's practice involved class action litigation covering consumer protection, antitrust, and claims against state and local government entities. In 2017, he negotiated a class action settlement providing $60 million in refunds to Indiana motorists overcharged by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
In 2020, he participated in negotiations resulting in a nationwide class action settlement restoring policy benefits to over 500,000 insureds. In 2006, he served as trial counsel in a case against outside professionals that resulted in a $17.9 million jury verdict on behalf of 8,200 Hoosiers left with unpaid health care claims. From 1987 to 1990, Richard served as Assistant Director of the Legal Affairs Department of the Anti-Defamation League, where he litigated First Amendment and civil rights cases.

A federal jury in Portland awarded $85 million to 12 Oregon Army National Guard soldiers after finding that contractor KBR knowingly exposed them to a carcinogenic chemical at an Iraqi water treatment plant and then lied about the danger.
CohenMalad recovered $66.5 million on behalf of 262 patients who alleged that Dr. Arvind Gandhi and Cardiology Associates of Northwest Indiana implanted pacemakers and defibrillators and performed open-heart surgeries that were never medically necessary.

A truck driver lost his right leg below the knee in 2015 after a nurse at Methodist Hospital in Gary placed an IV in his foot without a doctor's order and he was discharged days later. A Lake County jury returned $11 million in November 2022, and the trial court reduced it to the $1.25 million statutory cap under the Indiana Medical Malpractice Act. After the Court of Appeals ordered a new trial, the Indiana Supreme Court affirmed the verdict in June 2025.
Charles Sindledecker, a resident with Alzheimer's disease at Greentree at Fort Harrison in Indianapolis, was found unresponsive beside the common-room fireplace on December 10, 2010, with a badly burned right arm. A Marion Superior Court jury found the operator primarily at fault and awarded his estate $1,000,020 in 2015. The Court of Appeals later held the estate was owed attorney fees and sent the case back to set them.
