About Douglas McCarron
Douglas McCarron is a trial lawyer with deep experience in negligent security, road construction, pool drowning, dram shop, and auto accident cases. He began his career as an Assistant State Attorney in Miami-Dade County, trying more than 50 cases in the Career Criminal Unit before moving to plaintiff's work in 2000. He joined The Haggard Law Firm in 2006, became a partner in 2007, and has since recovered over 400 million dollars in verdicts and settlements for his clients. He served as President of the Miami-Dade Trial Lawyers Association in 2013, was appointed by the Florida Supreme Court to the Civil Standard Jury Instructions Committee, and is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Born in Atlantic City, he was raised in Miami and earned both his undergraduate and law degrees with honors from Florida State University.
Proven verdicts and settlements
Bobby Hopkins Jr. was shot and killed at a Gainesville car wash in May 2021, four months after another man had been shot dead at or just outside the same lot. The owner, Kokomo Key Properties, Inc., had put no cameras, fence or gate on the property in between. An Alachua County jury found the company negligent in December 2023 and awarded $3,750,000 to each of Hopkins' two children plus $9,000 in funeral costs, $7,509,000 in all, while assigning Hopkins himself 25 percent of the fault. Florida's comparative negligence statute cuts the recovery by that share, leaving about $5.63 million, and the First District Court of Appeal affirmed per curiam on October 24, 2025.
